Former Hawkeye Bernard Bennett passes

MASON CITY, Iowa – - Bernard Lloyd (Bernie) Bennett, an Iowa football letterman from 1950-52, passed away Monday, July 21, in Shawnee, Kansas.  He was 82.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 25, at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. SE, in Mason City.  There will be a one hour visitation prior to the service.

Bennett was a native of Mason City and joined the Hawkeye football program at age 16 on a football scholarship after attending Mason City High School.  Bennett played both halfback and fullback for the Hawkeyes before earning both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Iowa.  He was a lifetime member of the Black Iowa University Alumni, the I-Club, the Iowa Foundation and the Iowa Alumni Club.

Bennett later served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army from 1955-57 and later taught physical education in the Kansas City, Missouri, school district for over 40 years.  He served as a football and basketball official throughout his career.  In August, he will be inducted into the Mason City High School Hall of Fame.

Bennett is survived by his son, Bradley Charles, several nieces and nephews, and other family and friends.
