The University of Iowa’s free-tuition promotion for some season ticket holders is officially back on.

The promotion — which offered five UI students a chance to win $8,000 in tuition if they bought season tickets for Kinnick Stadium — was announced one week ago, suspended less than two days later amid questions over its legality and now reinstated as being open to all students, rather than just those who purchase season tickets.

“We are pleased the Johnson County Attorney and the Office of the Attorney General have approved our revised plan,” said Rick Klatt, UI associate athletics director for external relations, in a Monday media release.

According the release, UI students who choose not to buy tickets, but who want to be eligible for the tuition giveaway, are asked to deliver their name, email address and telephone number to the UI Athletics Ticket Office by 5 p.m. Aug. 5. Students who still wish to buy tickets can do so by the same deadline.

Students who purchased season tickets after the original promotion was announced have the opportunity to get a refund for their purchase until 5 p.m. Friday. Since the refund was made available Aug. 1, only one student has requested to do so.

The promotion was announced July 28, but soon after, UI officials temporarily suspended the offer amid legal concerns brought by the state’s Department of Inspections and Appeals because a purchase was required for the tuition giveaway.

Concerns were raised that the program qualified as a raffle, yet didn’t follow state regulations for a raffle.

UI’s promotion came to fruition this week thanks to two longtime Iowa fans.

Des Moines residents Greg Burt and Suzie Glazer Burt, who have been attending Iowa home games for 40 years, began working with the UI Foundation earlier this year to make the ticket promotion possible.

“We’re mainly interested in helping educate students. It’s not exactly for the football team, but it’s for fans and students,” Burt told the Press-Citizen Friday.

The donation was in honor of Glazer Burt’s 95-year-old father, Edward Glazer, who was a UI cheerleader from 1937 to 1941.

Tom Moreland, associate director of development for the UI Foundation, said Friday that of all the gifts from UI donors, Burt and Glazer Burt’s donation was definitely unique.

“That was definitely the thought process behind this, ‘Let’s get the student section rocking again,’” Moreland said. “This is a very special project with two energetic and generous Hawkeye fans who wanted to do something really special for the student athletes, the students and the UI community.”
