Coach Fran McCaffery’s Iowa basketball team will return to Madison Square Garden in New York City for the second time in three years Nov. 20 to face Texas in the first round of the 2K Classic benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project.
The Hawkeyes-Longhorns game will start at 6 p.m. (Iowa time) and be televised on ESPN2, as will the 8:30 p.m. nightcap between Syracuse and California. The winners will play at 6:30 p.m. for the championship on Nov. 21. The consolation game will be played at 4 p.m.
Iowa and Texas have split their four previous games, all on neutral floors. The first meeting came in the first round of the 1992 NCAA Tournament at Greensboro, N.C. Iowa won 98-92. The Hawkeyes also beat Texas in the second round of the 2004 Maui Invitational 82-80.
Texas beat Iowa in the championship game of the 2005 Guardians Classic 68-59 and in the first round of the CBE Classic 85-60. Both of those games were played in Kansas City, Mo.
Iowa has a 2-0 record against Syracuse and a 6-4 mark against California.
The Hawkeyes last played at Madison Square Garden in April 2013, beating Maryland in the semifinals of the NIT Championship and losing to Baylor in the title game.
Iowa’s complete nonconference schedule is expected to be released within the next two weeks. The Big Ten schedule will not come out until later this fall.
