With the top four scorers returning from a squad that tied for the second-most wins in school history, the Iowa women’s basketball team expects to be in the mix for a Big Ten title this season.
The Hawkeyes won’t have to wait long to see where they stand against the league’s best.
It was announced Thursday that Iowa will host three-time defending Big Ten champion Penn State in its conference opener Dec. 28.
The matchup with Penn State opens the Hawkeye’s 18-game conference slate that features nine games at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
With the addition of new Big Ten members Maryland and Rutgers, the league has implemented the 18-game schedule in which teams will play five conference opponents both home and away and eight teams one time.
The initial 18-game conference slate appears to set up well for Iowa.
Of the five opponents that Iowa plays twice, only one, Nebraska, finished in the top five of the conference last season.
Iowa also will play Minnesota, Northwestern, Ohio State and Wisconsin both home and away this season.
Northwestern, Ohio State and Wisconsin all finished in the bottom half of the league with Ohio State and Northwestern both winning five conference games while Wisconsin won three Big Ten games a season ago.
Iowa will play home games against Indiana, Michigan and Purdue in addition to the opener against Penn State and will face Illinois, Maryland, Michigan State and Rutgers on the road.
The conference schedule concludes with the annual Big Ten Tournament March 4-8 at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill.
All start times and television information will be released at a later date.
Iowa brings back 10 letterwinners from last year’s team that went 27-9 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament.
The Hawkeyes will open the regular season Nov. 14 against USC Upstate at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
