Iowa’s depth at defensive tackle takes season-ending hit

[ 0 ] August 25, 2014 |

cooperIowa’s defense appears to have taken a hit.

Defensive tackle Darian Cooper posted a Facebook update Monday that indicates he’ll miss the coming season: “Surgery was a success (I’m) sorry I couldn’t ride with my brothers this season but ima come back even better next season #glorytoGod #hawkeyes.”

The 6-foot-2, 280-pound junior was listed as a backup to Carl Davis when summer camp began, but his name was absent from the depth chart released last week.

Cooper apparently underwent knee surgery, but no other details were given.

He’s played in 25 games the past two season, recording 52 career tackles and making his first sack last fall against Iowa State.

With Cooper out, sophomores Jaleel Johnson (6-4, 310) and Faith Ekakitie (6-3, 287) or redshirt freshman Nathan Bazata (6-2, 284) could provide depth. “Faith and Jaleel have big bodies,” defensive line coach Reese Morgan said. “You’re just looking for continued improvement.”
